A gold skull coming apart underwater, with the title torn through it by a glitch.

A low-polygon gold skull floating in flat cyan water, surrounded by hundreds of gold droplets, shards and blobs frozen mid-splash. The word SUBMERGE is set in white capitals scattered across the image, each letter torn sideways by horizontal scanline glitches and fringed red and green.

Part of a series made in Blender to mix 3D, design and illustration in one image, and the first of them. It came out of shop-window installations, the kind where an object is suspended in a material it has no business being suspended in, plus water, skulls and distortion.

Two things are happening to the same object at once. The skull is being taken apart physically, by liquid gold that is both draining off it and holding it up, and it is being taken apart digitally, by a glitch that shears the typography sideways and splits it into red and green. Neither effect would carry the picture alone. Together they say the thing is dissolving in two directions.

It was rendered at 1920×1080 because that was the size of my screen and I wanted it as a wallpaper. That is the whole brief. Feel free to use it the same way.
